Too many coincidences, too many repeated descriptions of fabrics, elegant rooms, and the main character's struggles. Much of it felt like filler. I never connected with any of the character's ordeals, because it was all so far fetched. It was historical fiction with stress on the "historical" part, and in a bad way. Hundreds of names of government officials and soliders and what they're doing and their wives' lives and their dresses and oh GOD MAKE IT STOP. I finally finished it and I can honestly say I wouldn't recommend it.
