This book fell a little short in the middle due to the format of the chapters, but the beginning and ending were so riveting! For some reason, I'm a sucker for a book that fucks with my whole perception and knowledge in the last 100 or so pages 😂
This book is fucked. Read with caution. That ending though? Did not see that coming and I applaud the method acting of the characters, but the scenes and actions in this book were so dark that I would never recommend this to anyone. This book is crude, twisted, and so very dark. I'm embarrassed to say I wouls read the sequel where the roles are reversed.

This book gave me WHIPLASH. The embodiment of 'HA SIKE!' Talk about a plot twist?!
Alex Aster, kudos to you, my friend. I fell so deeply into the characters, especially Isla as the narrator that I was bamboozled right alongside her! I believed what she believed, I trusted who she trusted, and I distrusted those she didn't trust. I didn't get the majority of the twists until a page or even a paragraph before it was revealed, but I'm interested to reread this and see if there were more hints that I didn't pick up on.
I get these are free short stories on Audible... But still.
I feel like the moral was trying to be 'do what you love instead of what everyone expects you to do' - but it just sort of seemed like your classic pompous royalty story where the prince pays someone to do something for him lol
I liked this a lot more than I expected! I was sure how I felt about it at first, but I was really into the characters by the end of the book and I was kind of sad to see them go and close the cover. Bub and Lovage were a HILARIOUS duo, they ricocheted off each other so well and it made for some real-life smiles and puffs of air coming out my nose as a laugh.
I am a SLUT for mythology retellings and I will say that without shame.
This one though? Took some time to enjoy... The first few chapters felt pretty juvenile, almost; thought that fes like the wrong word, and such a harsh one as well. It felt like fanfic-y and young, which probably makes for a good starter into retellings for younger audiences, but it fell a little flat at first for me. However, there were some BEAUTIFUL lines. I found myself highlighting more than I suspected I would, to be honest - which just goes to show: don't judge a book by it's cover... The age old saying haha.
Overall, it was a cute little short story, but it definitely is not my favourite retelling. It's a good short and easy read to help get out of a reading slump, I suppose!
