Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

Can a book where you have no idea what happened in it be a five star?

I absolutely has the best time with Gideon the Ninth. The first half of the book I was confused and not sure what was happening. When I hit about half way everything started to come together for me and it was such a fun ride from there on out.

I hear about this book a lot on social media and they always refer to it as the "lesbian necromancer book." While this statement is true that book is about a whole lot more and the lesbian part of that is not even really discussed a ton in the book. This is a story about Gideon and turns into a murder mystery of sorts.

Gideon the Ninth is a hard book to write a review on because I think you should go in as blind as possible and be fully immersed into the world. There were many moments I was laughing out loud! Who gave Tamsyn Muir permission to be that funny!! The comedy was such a pleasant addition to the book where quite serious things are happening . I was also  shocked at the information we learned and that EPILOGUE!!! It made me so excited for the next installment of the Locked Tomb Series!!

I am not a huge nonfiction reader. I have enjoyed nonfiction in the past but it is not my go to. I am so glad I listened to Hi Honey, I’m Homo. It was a well researched and planned book about the the profession of gay characters on televisions.

We start out in the 1960’s talking about shows like Bewitched being one of the first to test the waters with a gay character without confirming their sexuality.

By the time we have been brought throughout history we are in 2022 and while gays may be a little more accepted than in the 60’s there is still a long way to go with equality of relationships in both the world and in the media space.

Something I found interesting is when they were casting the roll of Chandler they left his sexuality open to the actor. Whoever got the part was going to determine if Chandler was actually gay or straight. When Matthew Perry got the roll it was set he was to be straight but would play the line. “Write is gay and play it straight.” There are serval jokes and comments about Chandler being gay throughout the show.

From here we go into commentary about shows such as Will & Grace, Ellen, Glee and finish with Modern Family.  This was a show I absolutely loved because of all the different family dynamics that we were introduced to. This made it different from anything televised.  We got to see a gay couple happily married and adopt a child. We got to see them get married and live a happy and chaotic life together that heterosexual couples could also relate to.

Overall it was a very interesting read and I’m glad I took the opportunity to do so.
Stinetinglers by R.L. Stine

As many as a child I loved Goosebumps. It was my introduction to all things spooky and horror and that obsession followed me into my adulthood.  I was so excited when I saw R.L Stine was going a new collection, Stinetinglers.

I really enjoyed the second story Our Little Monsters  about the girl named Becca,  who is always  babysitting her siblings. She decides to babysit neighborhood kids  for some extra money. When a new family moves in she might be in for more than she can handle.

Not all stories were my favorite. Due to them being short story collections some stories just felt like they needed more details to them. I feel like one or two stories could have been left out and the others could have been expanded a little more. Overall I enjoyed listening to the audiobook  and enjoyed the small intros about the inspiration  for each story.
