The Bands of Mourning by Brandon Sanderson
5.0
A good ending to Era 2! There are still lots of unanswered questions that will (hopefully) be answered in Era 3. Loved the new characters and their history in this book. This entire series is just something that's so easy to get lost in. Can't wait to read more of Sanderson's work.
Replay by Ken Grimwood
5.0
If you were given a chance to relive your life again from a young age, with the knowledge of everything you learned, what would you do differently? What about again? And again? Would you use your knowledge of the future to amass wealth, or would you use all this newfound time to gain new skills? Or maybe, you would be selfless and reshape the world into a more peaceful and prosperous place. Replay gives an insight to this common fantasy, and you may be surprised to see where it leads.
The Serpent by Claire North
3.0
I chose to read the Gamehouse novellas after I finished the First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North, which was one of my favorite books of 2016. Although the plot itself is interesting and compelling, I was having trouble staying focused on The Serpent. Last year I read the first two books of the Gamehouse but never started the third. This year I wanted to close the trilogy so I decided to start from the beginning. Unfortunately, the narrating style was not something I could surmount. I wish the story was just told from first person or third person unknown. I won't spoil it in saying who/what the narrator was. That being said, I remember the second book being better and I look forward to completing the trilogy.

"P: Why do you play, my lady?
F: To be free.
P: Of what?
F: My husband, my family, my blood, my name. All of it. To be powerful. Nor do I say power for its own sake, but rather I would say for power as strength. Power as the strength to be known for myself, to live for myself, to be in a manner that has been now denied to me. That is why I play.
P: This is a very bad thing for a player.
F: How so? Surely a player has greater cause than themselves to play.
P: Not at all. There is only one reason, only one, why you should embark on this game. Would you like to know it?
F: Yes, I would.
P You play to win. That is all."

The Hike by Drew Magary
5.0
This book is a freaking fever dream. So imaginative and uncanny. I was hooked from the first few pages and I couldn't put it down. The Hike manages to be funny and ridiculous in one breath and creepy and unnerving with the other. Also an incredibly satisfying ending! What a ride this was.
