Mrs. Younger, just like Beneatha (who I empathized with very much) I don't have the heart to be as good as you would like

Child, when do you think is the time to love somebody the most? When they done good and made things easy for everybody? Well then, you ain't through learning - because that ain't the time at all.

crazy good play

interesting! narrator dude's ramblings were sometimes a little bit redundant though (which i get was the point at times but still) and i'm not sure the ending sits right with me

time to read more anderson!

Why we stuck to the baby carriage I don't know. It was unlikely other children would be born and the wheels were broken. People who have few possessions cling tightly to those they have. That is one of the facts that make life so discouraging.

this was quite the hands-on-many-braincells-needed-history-buff-mythology-nerd-and-christian-religious-trauma-specific read, but i loved every second of it

especially years!!! -->
O God, I am not like you.
In your vacuous black,
Stars stuck all over, bright stupid confetti.
Eternity bores me,
I never wanted it.

protip if you find it hard to get into: read everything out loud

[not 5 stars yet because that would require a re-read and actual analysis]

go girl, give us nothing 😍 this book took me WAY too long to finish

so, just kidding? but only partly.
augie march is definitely not "the all-time once-met-never-forgotten american" in the way one would think; he's just a lucky impressionable nutjob who constantly excuses his buddies' (mostly male, for the record) horrible theories and behavior because they have one tiny sliver of humanity

"he discovers the world - and himself - with all the brashness and gusto of a modern columbus"
where was the brashness :D and where was the gusto :D

there were little nuggets of wisdom hidden amidst the insufferable (stock) characters and augie's slow descent into complacency-induced misogyny though, so. 3 stars
