the latter half went a different direction from where I was really enjoying and got invested in, so I lost interest in it for a while. but with a somewhat predictable ending, it did it's job. particularly, I loved how it touched on the colorism and racism in our beauty standard. some things I let it go over my head and not overthink bc of how long this book felt? I think it could've been shorter.

this was fun! particularly, I really enjoyed the mcs and their dynamic. it's just my cup of tea.
Veronica's purple eyes did throw me off at first, giving the impression she's gonna be a self-insert character, but I felt she represented a curious and independent victorian woman quite well. and Stoker... 😩🙏 the man is so hot, a gentleman and carries sweets in his pocket?? safe to say it was over for me. definitely gonna continue!! I'm VERY invested in their relationship.

excellent coverage of the misogyny, gender and minorities discrimination, and the feminist movement with a much needed historical context. I was surprised by how many of these cases I had knowledge of, but they still managed to leave me speechless. also appreciated mentioning Japan, though briefly, as they share similar problems with sexual assault and spy cams.
I've always found it fascinating how a militarized country following confucianism can create such violently misogynistic men comparated to other advanced (or less advanced) countries. I have a lot of respect for these women who are constantly fighting for change, despite how hopeless it gets. some of these made me genuinely feel like I'd go crazy if it was me. as talks about "korean men being the worst" is gaining more mainstream traction, I hope they get to see more legitimate positive changes that makes them feel safe enough to raise a daughter.

for such a short book I think this was pretty solid. I definitely went in with high expectations so this wasn't the most fulfilling read but I enjoyed my time in my own insomniac night haha. it was really atmospheric, I could picture everything like I was watching a movie (particularly that one scene with Tuck and the rat. I was squirming). the characters were very interesting and fleshed-out enough for me to understand and like them. I didn't expect it to end so suddenly but I also wanted it to go on for 100 more pages lol.
