The Dark Room by R.K. Narayan
3.0
The Dark Room is another piece of R.K.Narayan, centered around his fictionally made town, Malgudi in Mysore. The protagonist, Savitri, is a typical 20th century Indian housewife, who is supposed to be completely devoted to her frequently unsatisfied husband,Ramani and her three children. But her free spirit sets her apart from other women. The author portrays each character, justifying the decisions they take in every situation, makes us believe that in every decision, man is guided by the morals with which they are raised up from childhood, no matter how right or wrong they could be.The book ends on a sad, but touching note, that one finds it hard to run away from the clutches of society.I recommend this book to everyone who would like to see a glimpse of how twentieth century India was.
