I don't read much in the historical fiction genre, but this was a very pleasant surprise. The story was built around the Tennessee Children's Home Society orphanage scandal. The author creates the story within the details of the real life families affected by the orphanage. By doing so, she builds a fictional family who's story is so detailed and believable that I actual thought they were real. The love story that's nudged into the book seems out of place and really unnecessary. Overall this was a wonderful book and I hope I find more stories by Lisa Wingate as enjoyable as this was.

This wasn’t for me. I’m not sure who to recommend this book for but I should’ve just passed on it.

This was an amazing book! Although it's very lengthy, I can appreciate the details and research that went into writing it. It really took me through so many emotions. By the time I got three quarters of the way through, I was ready to shoot Gary Gilmore myself. I haven't seen the movie but I do plan on seeing how much of the story made it into the movie. After this book, I would've loved to read a book about Nicole Baker and how her life has changed since the execution. The only thing missing are pictures in this book. How does a true crime book not have pictures?
