A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
4.0
Amazing -- just plain amazing. The characters were great and the story was unique, though the climate was a bit unbelievable. I mean, ten years of summer? What? But all in all, this was a very good book. It was refreshing to read and gave a bit of some new breath in fantasy. I was tired of reading how the hero would usually be placed in some dire situation and only get out because of some deus ex machina or something. It's lazy and it'll usually make me hate the author.
But not here. In A Game of Thrones, people die -- because that's how it is on the real world. Sometimes, the good people die and the bad people survive. So I commend it for just that. Killing off characters, especially the main ones, would often be a huge risk for some authors and George R. R. Martin takes that risk. I can't give you much that would spoil you, but someone pretty important will probably die in the end of the first book.
The problem that I have with this is its slow uptake. It'll take a while for the action to really start kicking in, but once it does, I promise you that you will be loath to let the book down.
You'll love this book or you won't.
There is no middle ground.
