I didn't know how much I'd like this book since I'm not huge on sports based series but I loved it anyways! I thought the description of Exy was enough to make me understand the basics but I think if I reread it I'd understand it fully.
One thing I loved the most was the wide range of characters and their personalities. I adore Neil and I'll protect him with my life but I think I liked Andrew more? (Shocker) There was something about him that just made me enjoy every moment with him in. I'm kinda disappointed that it felt there was more of the other characters than Neil? I feel like I only started to know him 3/4 into the book :/ I wish more of neil's personality was shown rather than most of the background characters. I ALSO WANNA SEE MORE ANDREW DAMN IT (but that's me being bias). But all the moments Andrew had in this book were memorable and some of my favourites.
Although I thought it was kinda boring by the second half when Neil and Andrew had a talk I feel things really kicked off and I could really see the potential of excitement and suspense this series can bring. Which is why I'm so excited for the raven king since I'm hoping there's going to be more games and action there.
I saw that one thing people didn't like about this series was the overdramaticness of it all buuut... I think thats what I loved the most . This book brought me back nostalgia when I was obsessed with this anime series called Inazuma 11 which I watched constantly when i was around 12. It was a football which so dramatic and filled with tragedy which lets be honest would never happen in real life. I mean there was a lot of violence and now that I think about it... It was kinda dark for a "kids anime". Either way I feel this series is going to bring back my love for dramatic sports series (I mean I've already got a Pinterest board). My short attention span needs that constant action and drama .
I'm not sure whether to rate this as a 3.5 or 4 but I definitely reccomed it since I have high hopes for the next book especially after how the first one ended- I was definitely not expecting that I don't even know what to say about it...
Overall the book was a good world builder but focused a little too much on side characters (but thats down to my opinion) but has great potential for the main character (Neil) and Andrew (GIVE THE MAN MORE... Page time!? Or screen time!?). It also shows promise of great action too especially towards the end with some gripping moments that left me shocked lmao. Definetly check it out if you like dramatic and suspense filled series or if you like sports series too!
Thanks for reading my review I was unsure how to word this one since there was so much I wanted to talk about but I feel like I'd just be waffling
