This Is Your Brain on Birth Control: The Surprising Science of Women, Hormones, and the Law of Unintended Consequences by Sarah Hill
slow-paced
1.0
One star because I want people to perhaps read my review. I wanted to like this book, but sadly I cannot. It is sexist, white/western biased, and patriarchical while claiming to be open and accepting.
It opens claiming that “all are welcome and this is relevant to all” but then the content devalues non heterosexual no cisgender experiences and/or doesn’t mention them at all. Additionally, all the research use was done on primarily western white populations if you look up the studies. The author takes no account of cultural influencing factors towards sexually appealing-ness or behavior and makes claims as if there is no influence of culture or “isms” or patriarchy etc. On how we think, act, and behave. Additionally, the evolutionary evidence and discussions she has are solely focused on the importance of species propagation based on the patriarchal understanding that certain males are more desirable based on physical stature. She doesn’t even mention the matriarchal perspectives that influence mate choice including the ever important societal change and development considerations. Early on, she uses a study done on males in strip clubs as showing evidence for attractiveness of females based on ovulation etc. Without mentioning any of the confounding variables including but not limited to: how female bodies and minds might be able to act given certain symptoms and how they feel! It is purely based on what their body hormones are doing-/nothing mentioned of mental space or physically feeling good or bad.
Lastly, This person is an affiliate of Jordan Peterson (who is a sexist, racist, white-men superior person). And that perhaps explains a lot.
