This was my first hi-lo verse novel, and I loved it! It was super unique compared to anything else I've read.

It is a quick read, but it tackles the subject of community, climate change, technology, and the sacrifices and complexities of a utopia. The connection the community had to Mother Nature was really beautiful. I think there was definitely space in the story to add more details and make it longer, but I still enjoyed it. It's a fast-paced story that is worth picking up!

I would love a sequel! The ending left a lot of room for this story to grow.

Thank you to Netgalley and West 44 books for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

  • Loveable characters? It's complicated
Holding off on a star rating for now, but I'm around a 2.5-3 right now.

I think the premise of this book was different from anything I've read, and it has a lot of potential! I couldn't help but get "Jane the Virgin" vibes while reading even though it's a bit different.

I loved that Whitney was a total boss in every aspect of her career while remaining a humble, good person. I did feel like we were walked through all of her emotions rather than seeing them played out in the story. I didn't get that emotional connection with her eventhough there was so much room for the characters to have big feelings, conversations, etc.

Myles never fully got me on his side. The way he didn't consider Whitney or her feelings in the beginning and lied to her rubbed me the wrong way. He also never fully trusted her despite her being the most understanding and patient person in this situation.

The jump from wariness to sex to love was all kind of choppy. I felt like there was a lack of build up to the relationship. There was no pining or real talk of emotions. I like spice as much as the next girl, but I think this book had a lot of room for a beautiful romance and fell short.

That being said, this was an easy read that I finished up quickly.

Thank you to Netgalley and Harlequin Trade for the earc of this book! All thoughts are my own.

This was a "quick" listen, but so impactful. To hear all black
father write to his black son to share his story, his concerns,
and their history... phew. I will never truly understand, but
just hearing this gave such profound insight.
This does not offer a happily ever after or simple solution.
It is very raw, real, and simply shows us how much work we
still have left to do.
