slow-paced
I was intrigued by the concept of this book, but I found it a bit slow and boring. I would recommend A Man Called Ove or The Wedding People if you’re looking for a book with a similar message.

I really wanted to love this book. But it just totally fell flat. I was so intrigued by the concept of a murder mystery in a hospital with a nurse ethicist, but the book was slow paced and I just felt bored reading it. The characters didn’t really have much “character,” and there were two unrelated story lines going on that just seemed random. I wanted to like the main character but she really just seemed preoccupied with whether or not she was technically a “detective.” Also, the protagonist is supposed to be a nurse ethicist but seems to think murder can be excused if someone has past trauma and that prostitution is fine. The author did so much “telling” and barely any “showing,” which I think is why I had no attachment to the characters and was super bored. There was a lot of explanation of Thai culture but clearly from an American author, and most of the Thai culture that was explained was just about food… I finished the book because I already owned this one and the sequel, but I’m not sure if I’ll even read the second one. Very disappointing :(

I read this book in 24 hrs - it was definitely addicting and I could not put it down! McFadden had me fooled and I did not guess the ending at all. The reason I'm not rating it higher is because I think there were a few plot holes/things that don't add up when you really analyze the book as a whole knowing what happens in the end. There were also a few typos but that didn't bother me too much. Overall, I don't think the plot/characters were as airtight as other thrillers I've read, but the story totally kept me engaged and I had a great time reading it.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and I couldn’t put it down! I did notice multiple grammar errors though which was interesting. It didn’t take away from the book as a whole though! It was a bit darker than I expected but ended in a good place.
