This is outside of my usual read so despite my rating, someone else may love it. If you are someone who likes more action in their books and less romance/emotions this is probably the book for you.
WORLDBUILDING
This book is not what I would call an easy read, at least the first half of the book. This is not a book you can skim through. You miss a few sentences and you might miss something essential. As a speed reader, I struggled with this. The first five or so chapters are filled with world building and descriptions and crazy names and places in languages that made no sense, that I felt were unnecessary and had me thoroughly confused.
CHARACTERS
Personally I have a hard time relating to characters who aren't showing a lot of emotion or trauma. And while there was bits and pieces sprinkled in at the beginning I had a really hard time relating to any of the characters and didn't really like any of them. The only characters I liked were Kaz and Inej. And I wouldn't even go as far as to say that I liked them. I just thought that kaz was mysterious and wanted to know more about him and I thought their dynamic was interesting.
In the end I ended up really liking all of the characters for different reasons but they all started to show more emotion and depth about halfway through the book. The book was easier to understand and it was easier to connect with after the halfway mark.
Will I read the next one? Yes. But I won't be purchasing either of them, just borrowing. It is also not a book I feel I would reread.
