SUPER strong first half-ish/general tension building, but then it quickly peters out around the halfway mark and by the end i found myself feeling pretty letdown, even cheated by how the plot resolved and how it seemed like the author planned, wrote, and edited the first act and some of the second lovingly, carefully, artfully, really giving it the attention and time it deserved which is easy to see in how well it's written and how masterfully the tension/anxiety of the story slowly grows and grows until i found myself so frightened and immersed in the story that i was unable to read this book at night if i were alone in the apartment lol. but then it seems like perhaps he ran out of time or maybe even just interest in the story he was so masterfully crafting because the rest of the book lacks everything that made the first half so enthralling and seems "slapdash" (idk if i'm using that word correctly but idfc because that word sounds so dope and i wanna use it) and just generally rushed/messy and almost unfinished, like the bullet notes one writes for a novel's outline made into complete sentences and given some punctuation. the ending is INSANELY predictable and i hoped that he would have taken it in a completely different direction for the conclusion of a story that had once been so strong and promising, but nope. oh well. i still feel like it's worth reading if you love as horror as i do, but it's for sure nothing revolutionary or even particularly interesting by the final chapter, which is a huge bummer because i expect mr. ben h. winters could have made something "revolutionary" or least something that didn't end up being such a disappointment if he had only given that last stretch of the book the time, effort, and attention it needed and that the story 100% deserved, but he didn't so what are ya gonna do i guess?
