I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook. Personally I think the best way to read a memoir is by listening to it as an audiobook specially if it’s narrated by the author.
The story follows Jennette childhood, teenage years and then adulthood years.
It reveals something very important -in my opinion- and that is; not knowing you’re traumatized as a child until you’re old enough to understand what was happening to you.
I used to often wonder how people even remember their trauma so vividly when mine personally came to me in bits and pieces since my mind blocked everything from my memory.
It’s fascinating how well Jennette tells her story in specific detail.
It was very triggering at some points when it began discussing eating disorders in specifics, going into details about the cycle of self shame, self awareness, then falling back down the rabbit hole of Anorexia-Bulimia  due to self shame again.
It’s a very reflective read, it makes you think about how much damage a person can do and then they can simply leave this life or your life without ever having to face the consequence of the irreversible damage they’ve committed.
I related to many issues discussed in the book so it was hard at times to continue reading it cause it became triggering, but I finished it because the story was so attention grabbing and I wanted to know how she got her closure at the end.
I’d recommend this book instead of any other self help book tbh since I think those are BS.
This is very reflective, slow to medium paced, emotional, funny at times and very very raw.
I’d check the trigger warnings before diving into this one though.

Well well well
This book is very very slow but I don’t hate it…
It unravels -in depth- Raihn’s character and what he’s been through from the moment he was Turned till the day he became King, and goes into detail about Oraya’s character development, her past, her mother and father and who she was and then her character develops into Queen of the house of night.

Favorite/ saddest quote:

“Please,” he says.
But the king just strokes the back of his head. “You have no more home,” he says, somewhat pityingly, words serrated with the thick tang of his accent. “You exist only here.”
Years later, the man will remember little of this conversation. But those four words will remain, even when the specifics of the rest are long lost: You exist only here.”

Everything was written in perfect balance in this book.
The authors writing style is amazing, she did great world building throughout the book, perfect character development -specially for the protagonist- and what I loved the most was the balance between the fantasy and the romance.
Most romantic-fantasies are more romance and less fantasy these days. But the book in my opinion focused on the fantasy in a perfect way. The romance was introduced in perfect timing. Once the romance was introduced, we went from enemies to allies to friends and finally lovers and the pacing of Oraya & Raihn’s relationship was absolutely perfect.
Something I loved the most in this book was the father-daughter relationship. That fatherly love that most fathers don’t usually blatantly show with words but mainly with acts of service, Vincent was the perfect portrayal of that “dad”.
Although by the end of the book I became a bit skeptical about his motives.
I’d say this book was medium paced (for me) but others have finished it in one sitting which I understand and know is possible.
I’d give this book five stars if it wasn’t for the heart wrenching plot twist at the end of the book. I’m sad and pained and I’m just mad at Carissa for it.
Otherwise this book is a 5 star.
