The Book of Speculation by Erika Swyler

Simon's parents are dead. He's losing his house to the elements and he's losing his job. Then, a stranger sends him a book that contains a family member's name. As he starts to read and research the contents of the book and his own family, he uncovers an upsetting pattern about how the women in his family die. Will his sister be next?
This book is dark and beautiful, and weaves two separate (but linked) stories simultaneously.

Eh. Not my cup of tea. This book was less about Eva and more about the people who float in and out of her life, and the horrible, random misfortune that befalls them.

Don't worry, everyone - a white lady is here to save the day!
Okay, besides that kind of annoying detail, this book was a good read. It was well-written, engaging, and I tore through it pretty quickly. I saw the movie before reading the book, so it was interesting to see what didn't make it into the film.

I was excited to read this book, but it didn't rise to my expectations. It falls into this weird place that feels too old for young children, but too young for those who might pick up a young adult novel. I honestly can't think of somebody that I would recommend it to. It wasn't bad--it just wasn't everything I hoped it would be.
