Beautifully illustrated and infinitely interesting, the book's most interesting aspect is also what makes it a rough read. There's a jump in topics surrounding the author's relationship with his family ranging from esotericism to macrobiotics to WWI history, but the way the focus of the series shifts between events can be difficult to keep up with and many of the segues are awkwardly handled.
3.5, rounded down.
Beautiful artwork coupled with a general lingering icky feeling hours after finishing makes it worth the read; but the rush through non-plot points and an ending that was less unsatisfying and more aptly described as abrupt left me with the impression that this felt like a case of great start, great ideas, perfect artist and unfortunate implementation.
And if nothing else, it feels like a mandatory for Dame Darcy/Meat Cake fans.
