I'm in team "loved it".

When I finished reading the book I got that super hazy nostalgic feeling, like hanging out with an old friend and reminiscing on the antics you did when you were younger, but your friend is an incredible story teller you let them take centre stage... but the past was filled with magic and mysterious people in hooded cloaks.

The writing was fantastic, the characters were great, I wanted to know more about the side characters and I'm not hating on it. I'm  assuming that'll come into play in the next book..and hopefully not the last... 👀👀

Now that I've started this series I've jumped on the band wagon of "anxiously wondering if we'll get an ending".

I would recommend it for people who are wanting a companionship from a book. I read this while I was going through a hard time and this was the escape and comfort that I needed.

Kitchen brought a beautiful balance of loneliness and grief.

I felt the book starts off a bit disjointed and left out certain elements that could help the reader get started, but upon reflection I felt it was beautifully done to help the story.

It handles different nuances of loneliness well. I'm also a sucker for anyone who can write about grief well, and in this instance the transitions through grief is nicely done.

Yoshimoto's work is definitely on my radar now and I'm looking forward to reading more of her work.

Slow paced, loneliness, friendship.

I went into this blind.

I had thought this was going to be a vampiric regency duology. Regency from the cover, but the vampire aspect? I don't know why.

So surprise! when this turned out to be an apocalyptic dystopian.

There is a lot that goes on in this novel, but it's done in a somewhat natural way that doesn't make it hard to digest.

We see things from the MC Lauren's point of view, and as she ages and navigates this world so do we.

Enjoyable and dark read.

I found this a hard and incredible read, my first read of a battle royale-themed novel.

Being marked as a dystopian doesn't make this read feel like fiction. The footnotes and the aspects of the story feel very real.

The novel starts quite dark, and soon you get to know the justice system and the people who live in this world which adds to the story.

Multiple POV can be a bit hard to follow as there isn't a real break to indicate a change of perspective, but it does well in telling you the emotions and thoughts of the characters.

Overall, the novel sucked me in and I was at a loss when it ended, in a good way.

Thought it was cute and I loved the ending, didn't love it as much as the first one tho.
