These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

I went into this with high hopes seeing it all over Book Tok and excited to read a one-off after several very long trilogies. While the storyline and plot aren’t terrible, there were moments where I needed to reread in order to grasp what was happening in that scene. There is a lot of description of what Shanghai felt like, though while beautifully written, are fluff, unnecessary and do not add to the story especially mid book. It also lacked the ability to actually describe the scene. It’s written quite poetically, and I’d like to read the author’s growth as a writer in future novels.

Fantastically written. The characters are so well rounded and the plot is amazing. Twists and turns down to the very last page. Loved it, can’t wait to delve into the second book.

Insane. Normally I find the second book in a series a little less intense than the first but OH MY GAWD am I wrong with this. So many plot twists and amazing description of this incredible world. I cannot get my hands on the next one fast enough.

It had so much potential.
The writing is great, obviously an experienced author, very descriptive, great imagery. Fine.
At the beginning, there's this palpable sexual tension between the female (and underage) character Tiernan and her not-related-but-still-her-uncle, Jake. Great, it toys right on the edge of taboo. Then it's the same with his younger son Noah, who is a very likeable character. Then there it is again with Kaleb, the older brother/brooding mute. If Douglas had kept the hummed sexual tension but kept the story line the same (ie. without Tiernan having sex with all three of them, wtf?) then I think the story would have been a) a lot more believable and b) created steamier scenes once Tiernan finally gets to actually have sex. Instead it's a weird bed hopping situation, for her first sexual encounter, that somehow everyone is okay with and at no time ever seek therapy even though it is clear they all desperately need it. Further more it is super misogynistic. I love a good rough romance but omg that's just straight up r*pe. It was hard to read because it clearly wasn't mean to be a r*pe kink. My final irk is that the author also states that with Kaleb's trauma as a four year old is why he doesn't speak and Tiernan thinks to herself wow how much language could a 4 year old have away - um a lot? Have you been around children...ever? Most 4 year olds don't stop talking.
I hope to read something much better from Douglas, while I liked the writing and description of the landscape, some of the plot was unbearable.

Obviously amazing. You couldn’t ask for a better array of characters. The humour, tension, explicit content mixed with the chaos of the world they live in is written so well you just become immersed in this world. The ending gave me actual chills. Easily one of the best books I’ve ever read.
