truly just too bored to continue. there was nothing that held my interest or intrigued me enough to push through a maybe slow beginning.

the characters are so true to their cartoon selves, and these relationships
(especially between zuko and his half sister)
are just so wonderful. also the artwork of the spirits? some of my favorite work yet.

the first story was very sweet, but the second story with iroh was just absolutely wonderful i loved it so much and wish i could have a physical version of just that comic.

the gaang (ESPECIALLY aang) agreeing to kill zuko Just So Immediately and just immediately Assuming He Was Wrong and “becoming his father” was so out of character was actually laughable. parts of this i did enjoy a lot, and the expansion of the world feels very warm and understandable ex. iroh creating boba lol. toph and sokka were very in character but i found the students of the metal ending academy SO annoying i doubt they’d ever be cleared for actual episodes, but the whole concept and conflict of the metal ending academy could for sure be an episode. however if i’m remembering from the first time i read these comics, the comics do get much better and more true to the characters from here on out. if we ignore the way aang was so crazily out of character and how zuko would never actually want to jump into war again so quickly, this was ok.

these character designs were so infuriating because instead of just leaning into a new style, they had some characters (ex. azula and the fire sages) look SO close to the original cartoon. i understand they were going off the movie designs (horrible idea and i have no idea who cleared that, especially since the writing was remarkably in character for the cartoon and followed lore that was only in the cartoons???) but they could have at least had zuko have his little pony tail. it felt so unserious because of the art, and i found myself wishing they just chose to fully go manga- like with the character design and even how you read the panels. the fusion styles just ended up feeling very clunky in the end.

words cannot express what this book now is to me. i thought the wicker king came and swept me away and this is just a whole new level. it is everything and it aches.

not especially memorable but i loved seeing more of suki’s story. her drive and love and trust in community was so awesome, and that final page was just especially hard-hitting.

definitely felt like this could have been an episode. the only thing that felt off to me was aang’s blasé attitude to katara literally going missing after falling off appa???? when sokka is acting more freaked out than him about finding her something is up. it’s one thing to trust she’ll be ok, another to just barely react at all.
