realizing that i much prefer faith erin hicks’ writing of the characters. especially with katara and aang! this collection was blissfully free of the cringe pet name obsession gene luen yang seems to have when writing these characters, and their dynamic was so much more in character. sokka, toph, and suki were also very well written and their dialogue just worked so well. the plot and script overall was just so well written and balanced. the search remains my favorite, but this is easily my second favorite of the trilogies. i did find the beginning a LITTLE slow but i totally understand how it was necessary to build out the world and setting.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 16%.
i’m quitting, this is just so painfully boring. first miss from this author so maybe i just prefer his writing for other genres than fantasy :/

only stars it’s getting is for katara being able to waterbed with only her legs. so many plot holes from the series that were embarrassing to have not been caught in editing. also this left such a bad taste in my mouth the way it preached this “love fixes colonialism” narrative and painted the antagonist as crazy, unreasonable and “savage” when he was making especially timely and valid points. also this just did not wrap up? at all? no conclusion or discussion, just half-assed themes that imo did more damage than good because they were not actually given the care, conversation and respect the themes deserved.

spirit story was fun, and i liked the topics discussed a lot. toph’s story here is also really lovely. i do wish the themes of industrialization were interrogated a bit more but i understand that the outlook of this series leans VERY optimistic

i feel like azula’s character arc has become just so stagnant. they should have let her actually go insane and really dived into the mental health aspects and toll because this characterization now is just flat, boring and repetitive. but the spirits were very cool, and i enjoyed the art a LOT.

very fun and beautiful art, i think the inner turmoil of ursa was quite beautiful. i do wish these comic writers trusted zuko more because his mistakes are all so repetitive and recycled at this point and i truly think them making him a messy leader does such a disservice to his character arc in the show. of course he should still make mistakes but the way he acts as fire lord repeatedly through these comics is so frustrating because i just truly believe he isn’t this stupid and hot headed (anymore). i will say though, sassy jealous zuko is everything.

eh, it was fine. lava bending is super cool. there just didn't feel like there was much substance. had the same vibes as a mediocre filler episode/
