Playing Rebel: A Royal Romance by Meenu Pillai, Meenu Pillai
4.0
This is my first book from an Indian author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It has romance plus suspense, action, heartbreak, royalty and cricket. It's like a complete package in one book. It's a quick read with somewhere around 300 pages. It's in series but can also be read as standalone.

Ridge and Emma were great!!!!
I have never read a single dad tropes and this was my first one and I certainly enjoyed it a lot. Ridge is this divorced guy who's sworn off any woman after his wife ran away with some hotshot lawyer, leaving behind her three kids. Lily, Code and Avery, I love Avery so much, she is so cute

"I came searching for my sister. What I found instead is a tall, dark, gorgeous man with glowing eyes… and it turns out I might be his fated mate."
Even though this is the second book in The Nightwolf Pack series, it can also be read as a standalone. As my first time into paranormal romance, I wasn't surprised by how much I loved it! As I have always had a soft spot for TV shows like "The Vampire Diaries" and "The Originals", that made this book feel like a perfect extension of that world.

This book felt like an otherworldly adventure that completely drew me in. I loved the concept of the human realm, the otherworld realm, and the underworld realm, each with its own unique protectors. The story stood out as truly unique, breaking away from the usual tropes of fantasy. The suspense kept me hooked until the very end. While I managed to figure out a few twists, most of them left me guessing—and that made the journey all the more enjoyable.
The writing was stunning, evoking all kinds of emotions and making the scenes feel as though they were unfolding right before my eyes. I especially loved the rhymes and poems at the start of each chapter; they added such a creative twist. Seraphine and Evren captured my heart, and I felt deeply for both of them, each for their own reasons. Seraphine’s struggles, especially the pain she endured from childhood, were heart-wrenching and left me devastated.
Overall, this is the best fantasy romance I’ve read so far—completely unique and unlike anything else. I highly recommend the story of the crimson eyes and the grim wanderer to anyone who loves a good, adventurous Romantasy.

It’s been quite a while since I read a book that made me experience such a whirlwind of emotions and deep empathy for its characters. This story touched every corner of my heart. I laughed out loud, felt overwhelming joy, grieved alongside Gwen, and cried a loads during their reunion and when they part ways. It truly felt like I was the main character, living every emotion as if it were my own.
What stood out to me was how beautifully the story illustrates that there are two sides to every situation and that appearances can be deceiving. Gwen and Caleb stole my heart. I adored their imperfections and felt so much for them—my tears are proof of that. The book tackles heavy topics like grief, trauma, and mental health with utmost care. Watching the characters grow and evolve throughout the story was deeply satisfying, and seeing Caleb grovel was especially my favourite.
I also appreciated how much importance the story placed on family, despite their flaws. The conversations between characters felt so raw and relatable. The writing was stunning—every word seemed perfectly chosen for the moment, making the book both easy to read and incredibly impactful. The depth of research into topics like colon cancer, art therapy, mental health, and the life of a superstar was evident and added so much authenticity to the narrative.
If I had one small critique, it would be the loose end regarding how their family reconciled with their relationship. However, when I look at the story as a whole, it’s hard not to fall in love with it. I can’t recommend this book enough, especially if you enjoy stories that make you feel everything deeply.
P.S.: I would’ve loved to see Caleb’s POV, but even without it, this book has secured a spot on my favorites list. I’m eagerly looking forward to the next one!
