Emily Henry's debut book took me by surprise in the best way possible. As a fan of her typically heartwarming and cozy reads, I wasn't expecting this dark, fantastically twisted narrative. It's a departure from her usual style, exhibiting a new depth and poetic richness in both description and storytelling. The shift in genre towards a mysterious, fantasy-laden plot with an undercurrent of forbidden love and a haunting family curse added layers of intrigue. This departure from her usual style left a strong impression on me, making it a standout piece in Henry's collection. If you're into enigmatic mysteries coupled with forbidden romance, particularly in the YA genre, this book is an absolute must-read.

While I found aspects to appreciate in this book, my enthusiasm didn't quite reach the level of adoration. The characters, while present, seemed somewhat straightforward for my preferences, lacking the depth I typically seek and the central relationship felt hastily constructed. The plot, unfortunately, lacked a compelling allure and failed to engage me fully. Despite my anticipation for a mysterious and eerie tone, perhaps spurred by the title, the narrative didn't deliver on that front.
Additionally *incoming spoiler* I tend to like less the stories involving a third act breakup, which affected my overall experience.
However, it did serve as a decent pastime read, offering a moderate level of enjoyment.
