I finally read The Wicked King by Holly Black, the second book in the Folk of the Airs series,
and I freaking loved it.
So here we go for a rant.
When I started to read, I feared not liking it as much as the first one. Silly me It was even better.
You may know it to this point, but Iâm a heavy fan of Cardan.
I find the fact that heâs bad, cruel, and foolish just because of it, without pity of extended explanations, fascinating.
Iâll never be sick of him, of the one heâs in The Wicked King.
Holly Blackâs writing is still enchanting and complicate, far away from being accessible for everyone.
At least in the original version, the English one, and not the French one as I heard some people say.
We go back into this strange world made of Faeries dancing and sirens with long teeth.
Iâm used to it by now, but I still consider the possibility that people can get lost in it.
But donât get discourage because the journey worth it.
Of course, I have two negatives points to address, because If I couldnât be critic with one of my favourite YA stories, who will I be?
The first one, that I can say here in my general review, is that It seems to me that this book was a tiny bit too short, I read it too quickly in my opinion but It may have to do with my excitement.
The Wicked King is the concretization of everything I wanted to happen after The Cruel Prince, which make me scared for the third one, but weâll see as Iâm planning to read it right now.
Alexa, play Hey Mama.
HOLLY FUCKING CARDAN.
Here I am, thinking you got soft and sweet being in love with Jude, here I am, being fucking wrong.
I was delighted to see him way more in this book than in the first one, logical due to the title youâll say but eh, Iâve been deceived before.
The first thing I acknowledge is that Jude was stupid to think heâll not grow to love having powers and being the king, the second one is that she was stupid to think heâll be enough in love with her to make her a real queen and finally, she was stupid to think that Taryn couldnât be manipulate by Madoc.
In conclusion, she was stupid to think.
But I may make it clear, I liked her during the first half and then my opinion on her declined.
At the beginning sheâs stronger, crueller, and manipulative, but after having a taste (hum hum) she just goes softer and softer, even getting caught by the fishy land, and Itâs the second flaw in this book for me.
Honestly, I saw everything coming from The Ghostâs treason to Balekin and Orlagh alliance, but I must say I didnât tough about Taryn.
Probably because she pissed me off since the first ever time she appeared.
There is a scall for side characters with me.
Normally Iâm just not into them, not really felling anything towards them.
But Taryn oh hell. I want to choke her so bad.
Because trust me, even If she had betray Jude, it was probably due to Madoc manipulations and here being nice and preeetty, wanting everybody to be happy.
Also, just a reflexion, she wore the enchanted earrings when she came to see Cardan, which were supposed to make you the most beautiful person to the eyes of the other, and he saw Jude.
And obviously, I did saw the wedding coming, I mean the third title is The Queen of Nothing, BUT Cardan, perfectly cruel, Cardan did the best flip I could hope for.
Letâs be real, it will be probably end as Cardan saying he did it to protect her, and that he loves her because keep in mind that Faeries canât lie.
What he told her was the true.
Saying that Iâm excited for The Queen of Nothing, and for the special book âHow the King of Elfhame learned to hate storiesâ who is coming, will be an understatement. <\spoiler>
Alexa, lance Hey Mama.
PUTAIN CARDAN.
<\spoiler>

What can I say after finishing one of my favourite YA series, the stories with Cardan?
Maybe I can thanks Holly Black for creating it, for putting it into reality.
With the most objective point of view possible, Iâll say this last book was as good as the first one, but I didnât like it as much as The Wicked King.
The pacing was sometimes too slow and sometimes too quick, lacking balance but although well done.
Altogether this ending was pleasing and satisfying in a lot of aspects, from the evolution of the characters and the story board that started two books ago.
Saying goodbye to Elfhame was hard but Iâm waiting impatiently to read How the King of Elfhame learned to hate stories.

Iâll begin by saying that I never imagined that Cardan would be transformed into a gigantic snake after breaking this crown. It was the best unexpected element in the whole story, really.
But it seemed pretty obvious to me that to free him, Jude had to «kill» him.
In the register of brilliant elements, I also want to mention the idea of the golden bridle, which sinks into the skin of Queen Suren, which I would have loved to know more about.

In the register of brilliant elements, I also want to mention the idea of the golden bridle, which sinks into the skin of Queen Suren, which I would have loved to know more about.
Because this may be an element to emphasize, I found that several events could have been better exploited.
Like Lockeâs death, Orianaâs point of view or the collaboration between Jude and Nicasia.
Like Lockeâs death, Orianaâs point of view or the collaboration between Jude and Nicasia.
Jude was to my taste too slow and less determined to have what she wanted, dampened by her love for Cardan, who managed to remain enigmatic and relatively constant despite the obvious place that her feelings take.
Letâs talk about the elephant in the play, the scene of chapter 21 that although justified, seemed to me to be a highlight of the story, after which some things that I loved, like the sexual tension between Cardan and Jude, disappear completely.
Madoc has meanwhile become a very interesting, aggressive, and almost fascinating villain of determination, I can only be strangely respectful of this man, ready to kill his adopted daughter, that he raised him in his image. This fight in the snow seemed to me to be a mirror fight, very rewarding on the finality that Holly Black reserves to her two characters, each in their own way.
On the other hand, I will not comment on Taryn, you know the sister who comes looking for Jude for her own benefit without worrying about what her twin feels? Yes, we agree on that.
Dire au revoir Ă Elfhame fĂ»t difficile, mais jâattends impatiemment de lire How the King of Elfhame learned to hate stories.

Incendiary by Zoraida CĂłrdova
I screamed so hard when Dez got his head off. Well, I know now that AndrĂšs isnât dead, and heâs even the long lost presumed second heir to the throne. When you see how their father can be violent and dangerous, bet you want to get the hell out of it.
Even if I found the behaviour of Renata a little bit questioning, I also quite understand it, particularly if the Justice Mendez saw her as his own daughter that he lost long time ago.
I didnât like Margo, oh god that I hated her. I swear this girl is in love with Dez and sheâs just mad as hell that he preferred Renata instead of her.
The whole intrigue into the Palace was interesting, but nothing jaw breaking.
I really appreciate Lady Nuria, how she acted around Renata, and for once we had a real side character who bring something to the table, not just a stupid girl whining in the corner.
I also found the relation that Renata has with violence well developed. Ren almost want to become the monster everyone wants her to turn into, so she could at least know what sheâs.
Regarding the end, as usual It is the reason why I want to read the second book. Hopefully Itâll be only a duology, which I preferred lately.
I knew theyâll betray her, rebellion of paper I swear.
Maybe Itâs a stupid point of view, but I donât like triangular love. I even hate it.
But here, we have two brothers clichĂ©s who apparently love the same girl clichĂ©s but one is supposed to be dead interesting and the other one is in the âletâs put a knife against your throatâ dynamic, enjoyable.

Oh, the pleasure to find a good YA fantasy, who doesnât make you cringe while reading it.
I was slow with Incendiary, even if I was totally hooked on the beginning, due to personal issue I couldnât read it as fast as I wanted.
If youâre looking for a way better version of Ash Princess, here It is you can try it.
Once again, we go back into a conquered world (sadly, without a map), where Renata, a young woman with magic power struggle between her past and her desires to belong somewhere.
Her magic is quite interesting, having the power to take memories from people, even turning them into a Hollow (a human empty shell basically) if she goes too far.
Renata is everything you can expect from a principal character in a YA fantasy: powerful, lost but also in love. And It will be this love who will bring her back to the palace of her childhood, where she was used as a weapon against her own kind, the Moria.

Iâm not going to tell Incendiary is the best YA fantasy Iâve ever read but It was a pleasant read, nothing extremely new but neither bad.
Iâll probably buy the second one, because the end was a true cliff hanger.
Iâll probably buy the second one, because the end was a true cliff hanger.
I would have prefer if Castian was really THE bad guy but eh, I almost never get what I want.

Broken Stars: Contemporary Chinese Science Fiction in Translation by Ken Liu
3.0
To my friends who only speak French, Iâm sorry but this review will be only in English since Iâm just compiling here my favourite quotes from this book, that I read as an advent calendar book.
Melancholy: Yes, I know you crave to be hugged by this world, too.
Moonlight: I can tell you a secret about life: once you realize how insignificant the individual is in the vastness of space-time, you can face anything.
Broken Stars: From now on, you can blame me the way you blame fate.
Submarines: That night seemed to last forever, though I never once thought of death, only soaking in the poignancy meaning-lessness of life itself.
Salinger and the Koreans: The human raceâs universal greed for wealth. It was truly tragic.
Under a dangling sky: The sky that you had been so entranced by before was nothing more than the shadow of a single leaf.
What has passed shall in kinder light appear: Perhaps youâre right. But the meaning of freedom is that you can always choose, though there is no promise that your choice will become reality.
Maybe this is a cheap consolation, but other than this, we have nothing.
The new year train: Lots of times, when the starting point and the destination are fixed â say, birth and death â why do most people rush toward the end?
The robot who liked to tell tall tales: Death probably doesnât have any friends.
The snow of Jinyang: Fortunately, people in this city have a habit of pissing anywhere thereâs a wall.
The restaurant at the end of the universe: You have to let go of yourself, join yourself to the world without resistance or hate.
The first emperorâs games: Obviously, playing games taught important managements skills.
Reflection: Everyoneâs future is in their heart.
The brain box: Only the young can be reckless enough to accept the prospect of revealing to the world the nakedness of their thoughts, secure in the belief that the moment of reckoning will not come until decades in the future.
Coming of the light: Whether you put your hand on a Bible or an Ipad, in the end you were praying to the same god.
A history of future illness: In the end, logic won over emotion.
