Grey Sister by Mark Lawrence
3.0
I particularly liked the Abbess Glass chapters in the book, as they built tension and developed her character. And then she all but disappeared from the end of the book. Nona's chapters, on the other hand, were so much less involved than in Red Sister, but I feel like the ending of the book for her was much stronger than in the previous. So much time was spent with characters that I wouldn't have minded learning more about -- Zole, Joeli, and even Pelter -- but none of these characters developed or had particularly meaningful arcs. They only popped up as necessary to fill out their simply defined roles.
Going into Holy Sister, I'm looking forward to more of the relationships between the sisters, more of Nona relying on her shown strength as opposed to sudden surges of power, and more answers about the nature of the world and its people.

Beautifully written. A fable with more emotion written into every page than most can manage between their covers. A journey where most of the movement and tension lies between its protagonists and their relationships, where the paths they take forward are explorations of the feelings they struggle to understand in a world that would deny them.
