Art is a touch too busy for my tastes. At least for now, my comic book art taste seems to be that comic art shouldn’t try so hard to imitate life. I prefer a more stylized approach.

A very classic superhero story towards the end, but with insane pacing and time-jumps throughout. The scenes with Clark’s parents were touching, but were force fed to us after they’re already dead! Lex Luthor came off a little weird as well. He’s a brilliant scientist that’s so obviously malicious right from the jump; how can we expect a man like to become one of the most beloved figures in the public eye?

Some touches were really smart however; seeing Clark paying rent to his landlady is something we don’t always see. Shows that Clark the man is just as important as Superman the hero. Superman is young, rambunctious..and not all that likeable. By the end he becomes a little closer to the protector we know him as.

But most of the emotions and relationships this trade is trying to make the reader believe in are simply unearned. Far too little showing and way too much telling with the writing, but with the art the inverse is true. Going from panel to panel felt very confusing and disjointed at times.

I didn’t feel inspired or hopeful after reading this, which is what a Superman story should try to do. And even if that wasn’t the point of this story, I feel wholly unsatisfied from the action that was shown, and even less satisfied with the characters that were introduced and hardly developed.

Biggest highlight is Bruce coming into the limelight and speaking out against the Red Hood Gang. Capullo’s art is great with gorgeous colors.

Felt like a really high budget Batman reboot that didn’t really try to do anything too new or refreshing. Solid pacing and believable characters. An overall enjoyable and solid story with not much to praise or complain about.
