one of the most grounded and human books i have ever read. the belseys and the kipps are as real as anyone walking this earth and their stories are sometimes more so than our own. can't wait to collect more full and lush characters to my own inner world through zadie. a big thank you to this book

a tender portrayal of friendship at the fringes of society, yet the center of the heart. smith's writing is melancholic, yet refuses to be read as a dirge. she writes friends, idols, and acquaintances into life with equal esteem and fervour. she is an incisive witness and renders her life a poignant bildungsroman of artists, friends, lovers, and changemakers.

Remarkably mid, but i did audible gasp at some of the cringy wording so entertaining nonetheless.

Was unironically very invested in the 20s atmosphere and period shanghai setting
