Read this because I wanted to watch the adaptation with Glen Close and it didn’t seem like a huge commitment. Well written, with several insights into how men controlled the world and women before feminism gave rise in the United States. I saw the ending from a mile away, but I was interested in how the characters were to arrive there. I enjoyed the first person reflective narrative the story took, as well as the structure of bouncing back in forth between the past and present. I trusted Joan and her perception of events and I deeply felt her complacency toward her husband throughout the novel as a struggle that only became clear and obvious to her after deep self-reflection and the passage of time (as is the case with most human beings). This novel was very similar to Lauren Groff’s Fates and Furies to me. 4 stars, and can’t wait to see what they did with the movie.
