The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
5.0
This book is amazing. The complexity, compassion, and pure emotion that Angie Thomas poured into this book blew me away. My heart aches for Star, rages at the injustice of police brutality, and hollers that BLACK LIVES MATTER. From a student affairs pro practice, this book is applicable to everyone interested, or not, in growing in their understanding and honoring of the Black American experience. It also looks at PTSD, gang violence, economic oppression and privilege, and white fragility in realistic and hard hitting ways. 10 out of 10 recommend this book, and thank Angie Thomas and all other advocates for the work they do.
The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang

I loved this book. It’s probably due to the fact that I too am Asian and have mental disabilities that have an impact on how I interact with others. Even if you don’t share these identities, we have to admit that it’s awesome to read about two sexy Asian people with diverse experiences and backgrounds falling in love. I just love stories about real people.

Would have gotten five stars if it the plot hadn’t been so easy. CLASSIC gothic goodness. Loved it
The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin

Sometimes I read a book and think “ok, if I I tried to be creative I could come up with this plot.”
NOT THIS BOOK. Jemisin’s mind birthed something immensely creative , multidimensional and entirely real with this book. It is both a question of what could be and a deep critique of what is.
