This isn’t a ghost story and you shouldn’t open the cover expecting to find ghouls and demons that come out at night. These are the ghosts of World War I and the ghosts of the humanity we shed in war.

The book bit off more than it could chew. There are definitely nuggets of fantastic writing and storytelling throughout Mistress of Lies, but there is no focus to ground the reader. Without this focus, much of what is good in this book gets lost in the undefined magic system, under-developed plot, and weak worldbuilding.

This is a beautiful and sorrowful book that shines a light on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, pieces of the Indigenous experience, and the complexity of love and belonging.

oof, this book is sad. like deep dark in the woods, generations rotting from the inside out, girls still struggling to be themselves sad.
I was riveted from the get-go and thoroughly enjoyed the plot throughout the book. I also appreciated the range of characters introduced throughout the book with one notable exception. I wish there had been more attention placed on the people of Shattock. Other than that, I thought they were are all very true to their time, place, wealth, education and upbringing.
The predictability that some lament in this book is the patriarchy. The patriarchy enacts itself in predictable ways because it works. It's not Moore's fault that patriarchal societies do what they do; her book was literally about the way the patriarchy ruined or harmed the majority of women in the book.
