Got bored did not finish... Might return to it one day, but thats a huge might... In another universe... Maybe...

Liked some stories, disliked many more. I got what she was trying to do, but the writing style is just not for me. Too much symbolism and unnecessary poetic meanings made this a drag to read, but hey, could work for others.

Ok, I'll start with the good. I liked the writing, the characters (there's a but... I'll get back to it later). Loved how the different cultures and races were described, not just how they looked, but I got a feel for how they lived, thier past and history, it's impressive how the history of so many diverse races has fit into just one book without the pacing being ruined.

Now what dropped a couple stars for me was, well the lack of conflict. I'm not saying it needs action and violence, I'm saying if your doing a diverse cast of characters, there needs to be diverse opinions, disagreements, different perspectives. The diversity was only touched within inner monologues and then fizzled into the surface with everyone being understanding, super nice and agreeable. Not only did this make it boring to the point that the author had to introduce conflict from outside the cast (like the pirates at one point and Pei at another with mines), it also made all the characters talk with the same voice. The only two that stood out as different to me was Corbin and Ohan, everyone else might as well have been the same person.

Ok so diverse cast with diverse backgrounds who all sound and speak with the same voice. Check.
No conflict between characters (except near the end for the briefest of moments). Check.

I do like a lot of the messages the author is trying to put across. Messages about diversity, acceptance and respect towards others. All good, but coming back to my last two points (no conflict and same voice) the messages lose weight. It needs that bad guy, it needs that one person who tells us the message is wrong, so we can PROVE our message is right.

There was a lot of potential for this book, so I'm a little disappointed. Not sure if I'll read the next two or not... We'll see.
