I wanted to love this book so much. I mean it’s sapphic romance meets zombie dystopia? There’s representation in this book that was fresh, and thought provoking but the characters all just really fell flat for me. It was really hard to cheer for Maddie and Saff to end up together because I actually really didn’t want that. The character development for Saff just felt rushed toward the end and Maddie wasn’t a very well written character in my most humble opinion. Everything about the zombie dystopia was textbook cliche.

Well this was me giving Grady Hendrix one more chance, and this was his third strike. There are ways to write books on the atrocities that have plagued women (I’m speaking broadly about the three books of his I’ve read) with respect, or ways to appropriate them and I just don’t feel they were written with respect. All his FMC have to army crawl across cut glass for a molecule of respect and it’s exhausting. Maybe his niche horror/historical fiction isn’t for me? Idk, I just don’t ever feel good about how he writes women at all.

I will be continuing the series, and the ending of this book made me want to give it five stars so bad, but the beginning of this book took forever to get though. The dynamic between the FMC and the two love interests was very cliche, and I definitely saw what happened at the end coming from a mile away. HOWEVER the character growth and the plot going on behind the scenes is SO good. I’m am HOOKED, I can’t wait to see where this series goes.
