Give Your Heart a Break by Anuj Tiwari
1.0
First of all, to give a one-star rating to any book is difficult, but I can't help it. I have to. Give your heart a break is my first read from the author. The cover page is beautiful, and the plot revolves around a sibling's relationship.
Plot - The recital starts with Arjun and Dimpy aunty in Dubai. She wants Arjun to write a story about her cousin, Addya. They reached to Delhi to met Addya, and she starts narrating her experience of mental and sexual violence in her marriage.
Addya's brother, Agastya is short-tempered and unable to express his feelings. He did a few crazy things for her sister, which somehow jeopardize his own relationship with Tarjani. The story revolves around all of them, and how Addya gets out her toxic marriage. The abrupt and senseless end definitely gives my heart a break.

The Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
5.0
The Palace of Illusions by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is based on Indian epic the Mahabharata which was written by sage Ved Vyasa. In this book, the story is narrated by Panchali's point of view. She is the daughter of the king Drupad, also known as Draupadi; wife of five Pandavas, and mistress of the breathtaking and stupendous palace.
Panchali was headstrong, but an egoistic and restless woman. Her harsh words lead to the end of an era, but it was entirely not her fault. She was just a pawn or instrument in God's play. The women were considered their husband's property. They have to do whatever they told to, which leads Panchali to a lifelong shame when her husband Yudhisthir lost their kingdom, his younger brothers Bheem, Arjun, Nakul, and Sahdev in a gamble to his cousin brother, Duryodhana in Hastinapur. That unfortunate day, Yudhisthir crossed all the limits and played gamble on Panchali and lost her too. Duryodhana and his brother Dussasan humiliate her in front of everyone. No one comes to her rescue, except Krishna. All of her husbands stay still and watch the disgraceful act, including the great warriors like Karna, Drona, Bhishma. The age-old rivalry between Pandavas and Kauravas played out in the ground of Kurukshetra, which is considered the end of Dvapar Yug.

Cheaters by Novoneel Chakraborty
4.0
Cheaters by Novoneel Chakraborty are a collection of nine short stories. The plot revolves around extramarital affairs and lies woven by the partners. The cover page is attractive and tempting.
All the nine stories are based on hidden sexual desires of the characters. Few stories will tell you about the women fantasies, while others left a mark on your mind when you think about why anyone's cheat. The stories are dark and narrated very well. Man and woman live with each other, but if they are sexually incompetence, they will start looking for different ways to fulfill their desires. Humans are trained to live in a moral perimeter since birth, whether it's emotional, ethical, or social. The mind will keep a person sane or in a limit, while the heart works on primal instinct.
The characters listen to their heart, but they are bound by responsibilities which lead them to lies, one after the other. The lustrous desires played a prepotent part in the life of female protagonists. The male characters share the same amount of lust and have hidden secrets. Few characters like Meera and Siya from The Whore and the Wife, and The Flight is on Time stands out.
The barrier of domestic life forced Radhika to change her identity because, in Indian society, a woman has to ask for permission all the time from her in-laws and husband. They treat a woman like a prized trophy and think that their wife's only work is to take care of his spouse parents and do whatever they told to.
In another story, Devang didn't come out from his closet and married to Kratika, the fantasies about a different person will connect them sensually. The language is simple. Novoneel Chakraborty smoothly narrates the dark and deepest desires of a person. The story unfolds many layers of hidden emotions. One can finish reading it in a few hours. I recommend this thrilling and captivating novel to adults.

3/3: A Trio-Ship by Mahidharnath Sesetti
3.0
Actual rating - 3.5 stars
3/3 A Trio Ship is a journey of three youngsters, Bhadri, Narendra, and Indira. The plot based on college politics and struggle of their day to day life. The cover page and title give a general idea of the main characters, but the broken chains say a lot. I feel the cover page can be improved.
Bhadri is a carefree and moody guy. Indira is a protagonist and wants to fulfill his father's dream. Narendra is a brilliant student. He wants to become a collector to change the fate of his village. Three of them meet in engineering college. The first meeting, the ragging part, tech-fest, family issues, the brawl they face, the author covers almost every aspect of their life. The three of them with the help of their friends and teachers ignite a fire of self-legislation in the whole GAT University.
The main focus of the story is on fighting for wrong. The author gives insight into student's life where they are the victims of drugs and alcohol but also forced under the expectations of other people. The freedom they deserve is not given. Bhadri, Indira, and Narendra fight for freedom and make the right choices for everyone else. The influential person is accountable for answers, and the author reveals that part meaty. Freedom always comes with a cost, but the question is who will sacrifice for it; Bhadri? Indira? Narendra? Or someone else?
The language is simple and easily understandable. But the grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and improper formatting break the flow of reading. I also felt that the book is stretch unnecessary, and the names of characters are difficult to remember.
Mahidharnath Sesetti took an unexpected topic for his debut book. One can connect with the characters. The plot is thought-provoking. The characters grow with a slow and steady pace. The narration is also smooth, and the twist and turns hook the readers till the end. It's a recommendable read.

Rewire - How To Be The Leader Of Your Own Life by Jay Kumar Hariharan
4.0
Rewire is a debut book written by Jay Kumar Hariharan. The plot is based on the experiences he had as an executive coach. I like the cover page due to its simplicity and craftiness.
We all have good and bad moments in our life. We choose our path, but sometimes we need guidance or a new perspective towards our decisions. In this book, the author helps the readers to find their way and to become a worthy leader. The book is divided into three parts: Context and Current State, Factors that Influence Reinvention, and Reinventing your Life and Leadership.
The first part is about how we achieve what we want and understand the meaning of leadership. We get to establish a new belief. In the second part, we learn the importance of hierarchy and the way institutions handle the change. In the last section, the author talks about self-awareness, feedbacks, the importance of difficulty, acceptance, and need for humor in life.
Jay Kumar has excellent expertise over the vocabulary. I learned a lot from this book. He used a lot of movies, books, and real-life incidents as a reference. It makes the novel an interesting read. At some points, I feel the content is repetitive, plus proofreading was not done thoroughly. I like the flow of writing. One can start reading from any chapter they want. The author's thoughts were candid.
This book is not a self-help one. It is more like a guide where one can reflect on the past decisions and understand that proper direction requires at all point. One can learn a lot from others wisdom. This book is that kind of. I recommend it to non-fiction lovers plus who are working in the corporate sector.

The Revenged Queen by Zachary Ryan
4.0
The Revenged Queen is the second book in a trilogy written by Zachary Ryan. Taking forward the revenge spree, this book deals with lies and backstabbing.
When Bethany reveals herself as the Marked Queen in prom, she thinks people will admire her. She startled when the Revenged Queen came after her. Danielle and Calvin's friendship remain intact, but they didn't learn any lessons from their past mistakes. No one did. Delilah goes after Danielle for breaking her trust, in the process, she gets what she wants. Jordan still feels the same loneliness, but a new character, Alassane tried to help her to get through difficult times.
Everyone tries to focus on the graduation ceremony, but the Revenged Queen digs deeper to take down Bethany, Danielle, and Susan. Calvin felt used by Terrell and understand the strain of being gay. He and Aman share a strong bond that finally changes Aman's mind. But Calvin's secret will hurt the Aman most in the future. While Danielle goes into a dark path, she lost Dan and stop caring about what others think. Tucker and Emily face the ghost from their past and it reveals how fucked up their life is.
Jordan was in full vengeance mode, while Bethany's focus on to be graduated by any means necessary. She thought revealing other's secrets will give her satisfaction, but all she did is lay her death bed. The sad break-up, parental issues, make peace with the deceased, lewd secrets, this book builds a lot more strain on the character's life.
This book also has some editing glitches, but it is a page-turner, like the first book. In both books, the game was to take down the current queen and reveal secrets. In the third book, rules were changed, and this new queen will not hesitate to take lives. My money is on Jasmine. Overall, I liked the story, and can't wait to start with the last book. Go for it if you want something sassy to read.

Becoming by Michelle Obama
5.0
Becoming a memoir written by the former first lady of the United States Michelle Obama is intimidating and inspiring at the same time. A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, she started her career as an attorney at the Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin, where she met Barack Obama.
The memoir is divided into three parts: Becoming Me, Becoming Us, and Becoming More. Born and brought up in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago, Michelle's parents never sugarcoated harder truths about life. They were the reason she becomes so determined and strong. The first part is dedicated to her childhood memories, the journey to Princeton, and the starting of a lifelong love story.
Politics and ambitions grew day by day. It affects the life of the whole Obama family. When Barack Obama decides to run for the presidency, Michelle didn't like the idea because she thought it will tear their family apart. But the way they handle every possible setback and secured time for family is commendable.
Michelle Obama is an inspiration for everyone. I admire the work she did for women and children. Being black, she and Barack Obama, never thought that one day they will live in the White house. While working as a Senator, Barack has faced difficulty not only in his political career but in the family too. But they overcome all the time and never lose hope. The author covered all the necessary details of her life, which left me thinking of how wonderful she is. She played the role of daughter, mother, sister, wife, friend, and serve the country as a promising lady.
She lost loved ones. She felt the fear for her girls, Sasha and Malia. Long trips, sleepless nights, following protocols exhaust her, but she was not allowed to express it. The Obama family did their best to serve the country, but when it comes to gun laws or healthy food, they face a lot of resistance. Michelle is an ambitious woman and says precisely what she feels. Her views on Donald Trump were loud and clear. Sometimes she felt bad for her daughters because of people's stare and asking for them selfies. They tried their best to make Sasha and Malia have a normal childhood where they were allowed to make mistakes.
Staff members make their life smooth, but they all have their tough moments. Michelle's mother lives with them, so they focus on work. Every person's sacrifices matter to Michelle. It keeps her prostrated. I embrace the way; she described every detail and engaged the readers. She and Barack have a motto - When they go low, we go high. I heard this in a speech of her, and since then, it becomes my motto too. I have no words to express how much I love the Obama's, especially Michelle. Being a great-great-great-granddaughter of a slave, she is one of the most inspiring figures in the world today.
This book is close to my heart, and I am exhilarated that she decides to share her experiences. If you love autobiographies, then just read this one. The book is illustrated by beautiful pictures of her family. It may take time to finish it, but once you do, it'll become one of your favorite read for sure. This is the story of an ordinary person, found herself on an extraordinary journey.

Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome
3.0
Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome is a bestselling classic of all time. It is based on a boat trip taken by three men and a dog. The plot sets in England and the author used different tales of history to make the book more exciting.
One day George, Harris, and Jerome decide to go on a boat trip on the Thames with their dog, Montmorency. They needed a break from their busy life. In their two weeks voyage, they met new people, face the worst weather, and feels nostalgic often. Whenever something happens in the present, they think about something specific anecdotes from the past that made the story wittier.
The New Uncle Podger and the Cheese Story are most noticeable; also the incident of Montmorency with cat made me chuckle. At some points, I don't feel the vibe of the book. The version I read has some spelling mistakes. Overall, it is a fast-paced novel where the experiences they had are worth reading. The language is simple, and the end will leave the readers with thoughts where simple things will also make sense after a long detachment.

The Time Machine by H.G. Wells
3.0
H.G Wells is the Shakespeare of science fiction. After watching a series Time After Time on Amazon Prime, I decided to read The Time Machine and other works by the author.
Plot - It is the story of a Time Traveller, he designed a time machine. One day while working, he travels into the year 802,701. In the dark night, the first thing he saw is the white sphinx which is the key to his past and present. Soon he realized that humankind divided into two types.
One is Eloi, who lives above the earth and fears the murk. Others are Morlocks, they stroll in dark and exist subterrene. Time Traveller meets an Eloi named Weena. She helped him with this new world. Morlocks stole the time machine and the protagonist ignited a war against them.
H.G. Wells described the characters by their profession. The protagonist portrays as a capable and headstrong man. Weena is considered as a symbol of hope and humanity. The other roles don't have space to grow. The words are complicated to discern. In the beginning, I googled a lot of terms. I also felt that the story is a bit dull. Although the book has inspired many more works of fiction, and I like the way the author narrates the whole story. If you're into classics, this is a must-read.

The Last Straw by Ed Duncan
4.0
One day a girl named Sandy witness carjacking and murder. Soon after that, her father was killed. A renowned lawyer and a friend of Sandy's father, Paul Elliott, caught up in the middle of all this tragedy. He and his girlfriend Evelyn took care of Sandy. But a gangster name Howard wants Sandy dead, and no one knows why?
He picked Rico, but he refused to kill Sandy. He has some rules when it comes to murdering women, plus he shares a history with Paul. Howard gives the work to D'Angelo; a hot-headed guy. He resents Rico and looking for an opportunity to hurt him. In all these dramas, Paul and Evelyn also became the target, and their former reminiscences start affecting their present.
Rico finds out the association between Howard and Jeff, the one who stoles the car, and why he is trying to protect him? But will it be too late for Sandy, Paul, and Evelyn? Will a hardcore assassin like Rico ever be able to repay his debt? What is the relationship between Rico and Paul?
The story hooked me from start to finish. I enjoyed the narrative. The writing style is lucid. There are no grammatical errors. All the characters placed perfectly and thoughtfully composed. Ed Duncan cleverly represents the world of crooks. The author is currently working on the third book, and I loved to read more about Rico and Paul's history. I recommend this book without any doubts to those who love reading a mystery with a lot of action sequences.
