I was very excited to read this book and finally see Cleo and Grady’s story, after the peeks we got of them in the first two books. So I was happy to receive an e-arc of the book.
Cleo is back home living with her parents after finally leaving her abusive marriage and getting a divorce, now she has to figure out what’s next for her life. Enter Grady, her first love, who is back in town and determined to make her his, and his adorable 6 year old daughter Charlie.
Unfortunately, overall I didn’t love this book as much as I wanted to. I felt the book was longer than it needed to be, and some plot points turned uncomfortable with how long they took to be revealed. For example I wish the truth about Grady’s soon to be over marriage with Liv had been explained sooner as it felt like an odd unexplained open marriage or even cheating since it wasn’t explained to the reader or Cleo for so long.
Also, for as much as Grady still loved Cleo it seemed like he never really moved past that 19 year old mentality of when their relationship ended the first time. And even in the end, their relationship felt very shallow and rushed despite how long it took them to get there. They love each other now because they always had, even though they haven’t been with each other for 17 years and that’s that.
I did love the relationship between Cleo and Charlie, even if Charlie was a little too perfect. And Cleo’s special moment with her Dad near the end got me good. The reminder that even though she’s the eldest daughter, and has been relied on by everyone for so long, she’s still his baby girl! As an eldest daughter that part definitely got me in my feelings.
We also got a great “fuck it” moment from Cleo! I love a good “fuck it” moment and having it be from the fmc was a nice change to how that normally plays out. The “dominant fmc” thing didn’t go as deep as I was expecting but it was still fun to see him crawl to her.
I am happy to have finished out the series and seen everyone’s stories play out. I am also excited Amber’s now announced next book in her new series which will feature Liv. So I’m sure these characters will visit us again!
