I really liked this book. The story does deal with a brief traumatic event and PTSD challenges. So for some readers it may be considered a little dark. I however, found it to be romantic, adventurous, quirky, fun, and in some parts, light hearted. I thought Zima was endearing. The characters and storyline were different and definitely not predictable. I needed answers to all my questions! Before I knew it, I had finished the book!

I liked the overall idea of the storyline, even if the ending was a little predictable. However, it’s the little details that really bugged me & left me questioning why the characters were doing what they were doing. I wanted Brynn to be smarter & take threats more seriously since she was a former prosecutor. I felt like some of the security protocols by her bodyguards for being so elite, were lacking & showed no common sense.

Just a few examples:

Brynn being the female protectee should have automatically had Skylar, the female bodyguard, assigned to her. But this did not happen. Skylar was assigned to Brynn’s male partner, Ross.

On the way to Dallas, the stopped at a gas station. Brynn went to use the bathroom. Her bodyguard, Erik (former Secret Service), waited for her by the snack area. Before she went into the bathroom, Skylar should have gone in to sweep it to make sure it was safe & stayed in there with Brynn. The protectee should never be left in a public space unguarded.

Brynn unexpectedly states to Erik that she has a ritual of going out for a run the night before a trial, & then she and Ross go to Otto’s for burgers anytime they are in Dallas. Erik sways her decision on running outside, so she goes to the gym. However, they still go to Otto’s for burgers. This makes no sense. Her life is in danger. Otto’s has not been previously vetted by her security team. The killer could have known about her ritual & attacked her there. If she still wanted to go out to eat, why not get Red Robin or someplace else? The point is to break routine.

I felt like some of the details were ignored or skipped just to create a scenario where Brynn & Erik would be put in a situation together. But for me, details are important.

Wow! This book was engaging, funny, and such a ride! Even no so good guys have really really crappy days. Just when you think Stokes’s situation just couldn’t possibly get any worse, life busts through and says, “Hold my beer.” Every time he cursed when something else happened, I felt the same way & cursed right with along with him. I couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen next & figure out how he was going to overcome each challenge/decision he came across. Stokes is the “bad” guy that I kept rooting for.
