In my experience the disparate nature of Latine cultures does not easily foster the kind of community Yadriel and and the bruix have. This is most definitely a me problem and not a book problem.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 20%.
I really wanted to finish because the concept of a religious science fiction-y apocalypse is right up my alley. I specifically picked it up because it was translated from Hebrew and the iconography was going to be a little out of my element and mostly focused on Jewish texts but that is why I ended up not finishing. There were so many things going on that I did not understand and because I was reading this at work primarily, I didn’t have the time or zooms to sit and think or research the background myths being referenced. I will try again later in a different environment or if I can find an audio book!

Adding this to my shelf of books that make me feel seen. There’s honest discussion about the intersection of sexuality, gender, family relation and getting older but growing up, in a way that is so absolutely what I needed to hear. There’s a lot about shame and how the people who live us hurt us because they don’t know any better.

Not for me. Very Captain Underpants funny and even as a kid that wasn’t my jam. A great compliment or replacement if you’re trying to expand the world view of your 3rd grader because the story lines are all based off the authors lived experiences in Ivory Coast.

The blurb does not do this book justice. It makes it seem way more thrilling and dramatic than it is. It’s told like a person is remembering it and telling you, there is some timeline stuff and the whole “plot” is free flowing and focused on feelings. The word choice is amazing and makes you feel deeply, the bruise in your heart where that last great love sat for too long and not anymore. If the story is not for you definitely still check out the Authors Note and Bibliography at the end for non fiction references about and from the actual time period.

Too much discussion of gender as being entirely male vs entirely female. It spent a lot of time Breaking down the difference between people as if testosterone was the only problem causing  misogyny and the perpetuation of the patriarchy. The audio book was only 45 minutes and it was fine for that long while I was doing chores but any longer I probably would have DNF’d

It was a book. It is asking to be made into a TV show so I’m really glad they’re doing that on HBO because I feel like that’s the only way that a story as dense as this one can be told without feeling like the slog it did here. The first 9 chapters, 230 pages or so, are thrilling and interesting with Gaiman’s style of throwing you into the hot pan with the MC on full display. Then for some unexplained reason we are removed from the main story line and set upon another much smaller feeling mystery. This sort of detour feels like it’s waiting to be filler episodes.

When we finally get back into the action I told my friend “I feel like this is all building to something but by the time it gets here the books going to be over” and I was not incorrect. The final boss took 100 pages and then we were in an epilogue with very little transition.

Overall I think I was just too hyped up for this book, for it to work on me. I read it mostly on kindle and there were A Lot of typos which didn’t do much to the sorry for me but could be a problem for some of  y’all.
