I appreciated the historical research that was put into this, however I would have loved to see lesser known innovations (or maybe I’ve read too much on the transcontinental railroad?). Absolute favorite chapter was about the Atlantic cable and the fact that it’s how we literally have wifi today!

Reading it as context and adding a backdrop to Jane Erye made me appreciate this novella. However I found myself having to reread multiple parts to fully wrap my head around what was happening in the story.

I found the characterization of the historical people the author uses as the main character was not done in great taste. Even though it’s a work of fiction, I would have appreciated more historical context and insight on the true Blue Fugates of Kentucky .
