It’s fascinating to see how my opinion of this trilogy has changed with how my life has changed since I first read it. I LOVED this trilogy this time around. I would have changed nothing. Mal x Alina at the orphanage for life.

I don’t know why coming back to these books has been such a religious (ha) experience for me, but I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. I love how morally gray Alina is in this second book. And oh, oh, how I love Nikolai.

If you want a blood-pounding mystery thriller, this will probably do the trick. But at the end of the day, I feel uneasy about the plot. I still have so many questions. Not about what happened, but how what happened would ever be feasible in any stretch of the imagination. The treatment of minority characters is also gross.

I put off reading this for so long because I was worried about what it would be like to go back to this world. Would it feel like a contrived Disney sequel? It turns out it was just perfect, as always.

If you aren’t new to fat activism and you’ve listened to maintenance phase for a long time, none of this will be new to you. This book is an excellent primer for the people in your life who still talk about “feeling fat” or “I don’t want to be fat, but you look fine.” I listened to the audiobook, which Aubrey narrated herself. It was good, but also missing her usual laughter. In particular, I loved how much time she spent uplifting and centering people with more marginalized identities than her own.
