I don't think I can say anything that no one else has said - the first half of the book was good, the second half was boring. It should have been split into two novels, with the second part being more developed.

I wanted to like this book, but it had several things wrong with it and only a few things that were right.

A positive is that the book was very nicely written. The writing, itself, was of quality.
However, the story was rather bland. The author introduced us to too many characters in too short a period of time. I had trouble keeping track of who was who, who was related to who, and what were their story lines. In addition, the book did not really go anywhere. It read more like an autobiographical account of the main character's life. Too real without being real enough.

Having figured out the plot "twist" early in the novel, due to the clues dropped along the way, I wished that the author would have done more with it. As it stands, the "twist" needed to be more of a shock/surprise to have a strong impact on the reader.

I found that this book held my interest, however, I preferred the chapters told by the mother over the ones told by the daughter.

While starting off a bit better than it finished, this book was rather dry and boring throughout. Focusing more on the history than actual life, it read more like a nonfiction text than a historically-based story.
