I Will Never Forget You by Tatsuya Miyanishi was a heart-rending read about Tyrannosaurus and a little spinosaurus named Wimpy, two dinosaurs trapped on an island. Wimpy persuades Tyrannosaurus to eat fish instead of him. Then Wimpy softens Tyrannosaurus’s heart by being kind to him. A friendship forms which leads to Tyrannosaurus protecting and comforting Wimpy. Once again Miyanishi captures the story with vivid drawings and a simple color palette. The ever present water is the most pleasant, vibrant shade of blue helping to create a backdrop for all the other characters to pop off the page. I am always amazed by an author who can capture so much emotion in such a simple format as a picture book; Miyanishi manages it with his fable-like story about being a good friend. Add to all this the fact that every time I read one of Miyanishi’s books I learn more about dinosaurs and you have a remarkable book.
Loïc Clément and Anne Montel have created a beautiful, thrilling children’s mystery comic, The Mitaines Gang. Arthur, the new young bear in town, and his friends come together to discover what has happened to their disappearing classmates. This adventure is filled with touches of humor and romance and bit of fantasy along the way. The spectacular watercolor drawings that accompany this exciting story are worthy of being framed. Ms. Montel’s lively and colorful drawings help tell the tale that is as old as time with children, and woods, and wolves, and magic. I cannot wait for the next in the series.
I saw the cover and title of this book was pulled in. Why Are You So Quiet by Jaclyn Desforges tells the story of Myra Louise, a quiet girl who wants her classmates and teacher and parents to understand her silence. Myra Louise is also a thinker, reader, and observant so she works on the problem until she has a solution. Risa Hugo’s vivid illustrations are reminiscent of Little Golden Books. They conjured up childhood memories for me. Their simplicity and colorfulness add to the story, carrying the reader from page to page. The illustration from inside the dryer’s appearance of outer space with clothes creates a mystique and evokes Myra Louise’s epiphany. The book ends with Myra Louise finding her voice so she can share her desire for silence. Overall a delightful read.
The Crowns of Crowsald by D.E. Night was a fun Fantasy read. Ivy is wisked away from her dreary life as a scaldrony maid when a cloud comes down to rescue her; her and her scaldron (a type of mini cooking dragon), Humboldt. The story just gets more fantastical from there. She is taken to the magic school to become a scrivenist, a job keeping track of a royal family’s life. Ivy’s days and nights are filled with school and magic of all sorts. Little clues and wonderfully eccentric characters help Ivy to learn her family’s history and lead to a show down with a wicked royal. This book captured my attention, I really enjoyed following along on all of Ivy’s adventures. There was humor, romance, peril, and mystery at every turn.
