It would have benefited from being shorter. The beginning was redundant but the ending was great.

The mystery was fun. I liked how I formed my first assumption at the beginning but then the rest of the book made me doubt it. In the end, the final reveal was very satisfying. But aside from the mystery I was not a fan of the book. It was hard to keep track of the characters (which was probably more on me than Agatha) so it always took me a moment to figure out which suspect we were dealing with. Additionally, Agatha has a really annoying habit of suddenly changing character perspectives without a chapter change or a page break  (a writing choice which made the book feel almost unedited and weakly written at times) which made it even harder to follow what was happening and completely disrupted the reading flow. Lastly, as a modern reader, some of this book did not age well and the outdated terms and ideas often made me cringe.

Overall: 3/5 since the mystery was good, but the writing was very sloppy and the casual racism was a lot.

Incredible debut with great fleshed out characters. Ending is a little awkward, but it’s nice to know Karin Slaughter only gets better from here.
