The Complete Hammer's Slammers Volume 1 by David Drake

I read volume two first because I usually like longer stories better, but no. This is a really great anthology just on the being-an-anthology level, the progression from one story to another, as well as being individually excellent short stories. More detailed review later.

I found the concept and plot of this story very compelling, and I really appreciate the attention given to portraying a "crazy old woman" sympathetically and showing why she does some of the things she does. But I wish this story was longer and had more atmospheric detail. It mostly focuses on the main character's thoughts and decisions, and I felt like it got a little repetitive. I would have appreciated some more description of the characters and the setting, and something to make it feel more like time was passing. The ending was still chilling, though.
