Almost a perfect book - so tense and such a unique type of horror . the world building was insanely well done , and the characters were all extremely well written , including the women . The only thing that made it not perfect is the hard R n-word and slight transphobia 🫣 Lou and Vic are two of my favorite characters ever though

writing about the trans experience is difficult if course , but as a trans personbit comes almost naturally. however , accurately describing autism from amy perspective , especially internal , is almost unheard of , and this novel somehow does all of that perfectly .

Clay's my favorite author for a reason ! this book really hit it out of the park for me . it's not quite a 5 simply because it didn't scare me quite like some of his other titles , but it was absolute perfection in every other way ! men writing women (especially in horror) tends to go awry quickly , but never have I felt that Clay's work treats women like anything other than well rounded chatacters with depth , personality , and their own story to tell . i'm a slut for an allegory , and this one was gorgeous .

i was so into the first 1/3 of the book (the gore , the writing style , the mindfuck of it all) but once the book switched perspective to the elk headed woman it lost all appeal to me . i was incredibly excited about this book and so deeply and whole heartedly disappointed in it .

MORE QUEER FOCUSED HORROR PLEASE !! this book is so dark , gorgeous , and cherishable !!! the most beautifully written experience i've had the pleasure to read . i truly felt anxious and scared as i lived DEEP in this universe Kristi DeMeester created , but i also felt such sadness , love , and sympathy for the characters and their stories . Lila and Caroline are not only my favorite characters i've read , but ones that will stick with me in every day of my life . as a queer , afab trans person who came out at around Lila's age raised by a single mother who recently passed away ... wow . this book spoke to me in ways i never knew a horror novel could . an absolutely chilling , sorrowful , and astounding ride .
