The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by S.A. Chakraborty

This was a real treat. I wasn’t sure if this was something I’d like after reading the summary, but I’m glad I followed through (for book club). The characters are rich and the setting is dynamically atmospheric. It’s also very refreshing to read an action-packed fantasy adventure with a middle aged poc lead.
Would absolutely recommend.

I had no plans on ever reading bc this but somehow both this and Iron Flame were immediately available from the library so I said what the hell.
Unfortunately, I have to say I really enjoyed it. Is it the greatest thing I’ve ever read? No. But it’s fun and action-packed and felt kind of nostalgic in a way. Sort of like the YA books of the early aughts but grown up.

Wonderful and witty dialogue that made me literally squee. Enemies to lovers isn’t my favorite trope but nothing beats right person wrong time. Stupendous!

I love a sports story and there was a good chunk in the middle that I adored. I enjoyed the sports commentator passages, but really hated that all the backstory was just info dumped very quickly in the beginning. Carrie is also deeply unlikeable, but she does make for a very interesting character.

What a delight! From the worldbuilding to the characters and their interactions, this was a cozy and magical read while still feeling tense and intriguing. I'm almost sad it's only a duology because I would like to spend an eternity with these characters.
