jesus christ, I just finished this one this afternoon and I don't know how to put into words what a phenomenal book it was?!

the story follows Jake, who is made aware by a friend of a hole in time leading to 1958. said friend then encourages Jake to complete a mission he can't due to ill health - go back in time and stop the JFK assassination in the hopes that if it doesn't happen, neither will a lot of the other shitty things in history. whilst living in the past Jake also meets and falls in love with Sadie - one of the most endearing love interests I've ever had the pleasure of reading about.

I actually don't know how to compile my thoughts, I'm in awe of this whole story. firstly, as can be expected with a Stephen King book, all the characters were wonderfully well developed, and the good people were written with search heart it made mine ache to read about them. his descriptions of the late 50s to early 60's were wonderful too. he captured the wistful 'simpler time' elements with fondness, whilst not shying away from the issues of racism, sexism and classis so prevalent in this era.

obviously all the stuff about Lee Harvey Oswald was fascinating and I learnt a lot, which I enjoyed. and Jake's mission to stop the assassination was exciting and complicated and horribly gritty and I loved every second! but it was really the characters, and the smaller everyday moments that made this book so wonderful. not least of all the beautiful, sometimes heart wrenching love between Jake and Sadie, and the goings on in the school where they work.

I won't spoil anything but mannnn what an ending! I liked that it tied just about everything up whilst still leaving little mysteries to think about! and oh how it wrecked me a little. I closed the book and bawled and I shall definitely have it on my mind for a good while.
