More a collection of connected short stories and poems than a novel, I really enjoyed this. It's ambitious and creative.

I enjoy a slow-build atmospheric novel. But this was not that, instead it was just poorly paced. The prose was neither awful nor good, but the dialogue was clunky and unbelievable. The ending was ridiculous and far too fast. And throughout there was this tendency, common in this era of terrible reading comprehension, to lecture the reader about what exactly they are supposed to take away from the book and what the themes of the book are. I hate that.

Excellent. Teenage queerness in all its messy, beautiful, filthy, embarrassing, awful, cringeworthy glory. Fay was painfully familiar to me to the point it was sometimes physically painful to read.

Liked it a lot. Went a bit off the rails and over-sentimental with the
Leannan Si stuff
but came back for the ending.

ended up skimming it. It's alright. Characterisation is thin and just like the last asylum novel I read there's little to no insight into the subject.

Angry, sad book. Wish it wasn't so insistent on undercutting its own points with overexplanation though.
