The follow-up investigation led by Anna Politkovskaya in the crimes committed in Chechnya at the dawn of the second Chechen War. A must-read for anyone who’s interested in Chechen history and a glooming inspection in the Russian army and the Kremlin’s structures / attitudes. 20 years separate this conflict from the invasion of Ukraine and we have still so much to learn from the Chechen community.

More than a crucial and unique account of the civilians’ suffering, it’s the bravery and resilience of the people who talked to Anna Politkovskaya that make this book a very important piece of archive and shows a remarkable will to uncover the truth and hold accountable the criminals responsible. Anna, you are greatly missed.

Intriguing and incredibly sarcastic, Kurkov’s renowned masterpiece is a delight of a story. First, the premises contain all the elements to make it a curious story: a penguin and a random man. But the magic of this book lays in the structure and genres Kurkov explores and mixes: comedy, satire, thriller and adventure make this story a truly remarkable read. the ending is the sweetest part.
