This took me a while to get into but once I did, I was hooked!

I liked the flashback POV and how it ended up tying into the main story. The characters were interesting (not likable) but they developed the story along at a pace that I enjoyed.

The last 100 pages had me in suspense! I had to know what happened. I thought I knew the twist and I was partly right, but I was surprised at the full turn of events.

Recommend for sure :)

Beautifully written.

Some of the quotes that stuck out to me;

-“The trouble with letting people see you at your worst isn’t that they’ll remember; it’s that you’ll remember.” - Sarah Manguso
-The story always looks a little different, depending on who is telling it.
-“You were suspicious of their feelings because you had no reason to love yourself - not your body, not your mind. You rejected so much gentleness. What were you looking for?”
-“You pile up associations the way you pile up bricks. Memory itself is a form of architecture.” -Louise Bourgeois
-“If you are silent about your pain, they’ll kill you and say you enjoyed it.” -Zoe’s Neale Hurston

The mystery and setting in this book was so good. The prequel to this was very slow and it took me a long time to get into, but I didn’t have that issue with this book.

The characters and their story was intriguing. And seeing how they inadvertently were connected to the murder plot, chef’s kiss !

There was one plot twist I didn’t see coming and I was shook.

Favorite parts:
- She always cared too much about what other people thought of her.
- It’s comforting, in a weird way, to think that someone else understands a fact that’s usually taboo: not all parents are good parents.
- A terrible emptiness blooms inside her. This is what lies do, she thinks numbly—hollow you out. The bond between people—that mass of something certain and solid—is destroyed, and all you have left is the shell.
- The only really cowardly thing I’ve done is not be true to myself.

I love historical fiction sm and this book is so well done.

I loved Lucré and her entire personality and how she persisted in a time when women were literally just objects and pawns for their families.

Did she slay or did she slay?

This book was very slay girlboss but at first I wasn’t very into it. It’s a fun and easy read, I love how the author writes - it makes reading enjoyable. The chapters were 20+ pages but I flew through them.

I loved how trauma was discussed and brought up in this book, well done!

- When you’re sad, you cry. When you’re happy, you smile, you laugh. But what do you do when you’re angry? Not just mad, but filled with this ugly, consuming rage? And the thing is, women aren’t allowed to be angry. Nobody likes a mad woman. They’re crazy, irrational, obnoxious, shrill.

- It’s a miracle and it’s a curse, the secrets our bodies keep. The ability to carry the invisible burden of these secrets.

- I forgot. I’m so used to being reminded how ugly a place the world can be, I forgot it could be beautiful, too.
