Sharks in the Time of Saviors by Kawai Strong Washburn

Go to review page

This was a beautiful story: a touching, family-focused, character-driven novel. It was moving and compassionate and kind. It also has one of the only good scenes representing lactose intolerance I've ever read (with a mostly minor side character) that shows that people with intolerances are still loveable and funny. 🩷

However! I did have a 1 problem with the content of the book and learned later that the marketing for the book/author was disingenuous. ⬇️

Content problem: There is no need to use the r-word.

Marketing problem: Apparently this book was marketed at a Native Hawai'ian story — the marketing also implied that the author himself is Native Hawai'ian. It might have been inspired by Native Hawai'ian myths, but this is not representative of Native Hawai'ian culture or beliefs (found this with a quick Google).

So! Read with care/caution if you choose to read at all. I didn't know. Now I know.

Abolition. Feminism. Now. by Gina Dent, Erica Meiners, Beth Richie, Angela Y. Davis

A great overview of abolition, feminism, and intersectionality.

One of my favorite call-outs from this one, specifically, is about how abolition is often sometimes seen as a utopian solution and how that makes even the organizing for it rather unobtainable. We're all human, we all make mistakes, and abolition is meant to support humans; so it's natural that the process of abolition itself might be wrought with trip-ups and tumbles. And maybe that's the point because in figuring out how to navigate the trip-ups, we learn valuable lessons about how to care for one another more deeply and start to build new systems and practices that become instrumental to a society that values freedom for everyone.

IMHO?
Bookshops & Bonedust >>> Legends & Lattes.

The food allergy dismissal in L&L made the *cozy* vibes decidedly less welcoming to me, so I almost didn't pick this sequel up... I'm very glad I did, though. I think this book was, to me, what L&L was for people who don't have to worry about their food restrictions being believed; and it was very sweet to feel like there would be a place for me in this magical cozy world and I really want Fern to give me a personalized book recommendation now.

I've been staring at my phone trying to write a review for 20 minutes. I can't. This book is beautiful. It'll break your heart and make you love your people (and stories) even more. That's all I've got.

Outspoken: My Fight for Freedom and Human Rights in Afghanistan by Sima Samar

I knew very little about Afghanistan's history, and I learned so much reading this book!

And... I'm a lot more aware of how much I don't know now as well. Definitely going to have to keep an eye out for more stories (fiction and non) from Afghan writers.

If you're reading this review and have recommendations, please send them my way!

Care Work: Dreaming Disability Justice by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha

My heart! This book was so needed and so healing.

Personally, I especially appreciated the essay/chapter on ableism in the spiritual and energy-healing communities. It validated a lot about how I experienced that community and made me feel less alone or like less of a failure by not being able to change it.

Content Warning: Everything by Akwaeke Emezi

Did not finish book. Stopped at 6%.
I think sometimes Akwaeke Emezi is too smart for me. Will probably revisit this collection later when my brain can absorb a little more. 🤍
